I’ve contemplated these types of thoughts many times, “What’s my purpose? What am I on this Earth to do? What is my calling?” On my years of self-searching I have come to find that my purpose is similar to my passion.
What is my passion? Back in college, they ask you what you want to pursue a degree in and how are you supposed to know what your career is going to be at 18 or 19 years old. I know I had no idea. I thought, “Why don’t I choose something I’m good at,” that way I will succeed. Everybody wants success, to succeed in business, finance, and life. I thought success would come to me, if only I chose a degree that catered to my talents. So, I graduated with a degree in Advertising and Public Relations. I loved people, networking, marketing, journalism, and sales, so I thought it was the right fit.
SUCCESS, PASSION, & PURPOSE
Being good at something and having passion for it are two different things. For example, I have a passion for service, and I’m good sales. You can use both of these to become a successful sales person, which I did for a couple of years. However, I took my life a step further when I decided to put everything I had into my passion, and use what I’m good at to serve my passion. Basically, I turned my whole model upside down. Instead of using my talents to find my passion, I found my passion and my talents came naturally.
For years I thought success came when we worked hard at what we’re good at, used our talents to get us far in life, far enough to places where we become happy. It turns out, I was wrong. Instead, life is about finding your passion and using your talents to serve your passion, where you find success naturally, in your pursuit of your purpose.
HOW DO I FIND MY PURPOSE?
So, how do we find our purpose? It’s in our passion! Where ever our passion lies, our purpose is. Every one of us has a fire inside of us, that drives us to do more, be more, and create more. There is a drive that propels us to act, speak up, and speak out for things we believe in. This is our passion. Our purpose is in direct alignment with our passion. All we have to do is use our passion and direct it into actions, for it to become our purpose. For example, when I left my job in sales, I decided I wanted to build a nonprofit. This was the exact opposite of what I was bred to do, so I dedicated my entire life to learning about how to meet that goal. First, I made a decision, “I’m going to build a nonprofit.” Then I acted on that decision. Once I acted on that decision, I was acting on purpose, in my passion.
Once you are on purpose, in your passion, your motivation and drive excels ten-fold, because you are doing exactly what you are meant to do. I felt I was in alignment with everything; my talents, my passion, my cause, my actions, my words, and my habits. It was invigorating, I felt truly alive for the first time in my life! It was as if my heart and mind were connected spiritually, mentally, physically, to a higher state of consciousness. I wanted to save that feeling and share it with others. Most of all, keep that flame burning.
So, how do you find your purpose? First, you make a decision to live in your passion. You dedicate yourself to following your heart. Your mind will follow in time, just give it time. I knew what I loved to do, so I just did it! It’s easy and simple. All you have to do is make a decision, and act on the decision, in every area of your life. Fear will try and come in and steer you away, it’s ok to be afraid, to walk through your fear. Do it anyway! Walk through that fear! You are more powerful than you think.
